Arizona’s bioscience sector accounted for $3.6 billion in revenue and more than 13,500 jobs in 2007, according to a study unveiled Tuesday.
That does not include hospitals, many of which have extensive biomedical research activities. When hospitals and academic research at the three state universities are included, the total rises to $12.5 billion and more than 87,400 jobs in 2007, the most recent data available. That’s up from $7.98 billion and 72,855 jobs in 2002.

The Grand Canyon is the cover picture for a new report on alternatives for solving Arizona's budget crisis. It could symbolize the massive size of the deficit: $3 billion, about a third of the General Fund budget for fiscal 2010.

Arizona needs more money to meet its budget needs, a university study concludes in offering a variety of tax hikes and other options to resolve the state's budget deficit.
Legislative leaders were non-committal about many of the options, and at least one rejected the tax increases.
The Legislature's GOP leaders asked for the report after the Arizona Board of Regents and the state's universities protested planned cuts to their budgets.
